I’m a Google Glasserer!!

I’m sure “Google Glasser” is not a transitive verb, nor will it probably catch on anytime soon, but I give you permission to use it freely and unapologetically! This past Friday, December 13, I became the owner of a pair of Google Glass Explorer Edition. For those of you who are unaware of what these are, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with them here: https://www.google.com/glass/start/.

After getting invited to the Explorer Program, I quickly accepted & ordered them online and chose to pick them up from the Google office instead of having them mailed to me. So after a 50 minute drive to their Venice, CA campus, I was escorted by my personal Google Glass rep to the Google Glass building where I got to make a final decision on the color I wanted as well as a detailed overview of how to use Google Glass. What was supposed to be a 30 minute tutorial turned into an hour. Sami, my rep, was the best! We were chatting about everything Glass, sports, entertainment, etc.

After saying my goodbyes to the Google office and Sami, I headed out into the world as a new Explorer. And like anyone who gets a new device, I did the most simplest thing that one can do with them: I recorded a video.

* And I should add the disclaimer that I DO NOT recommend nor do I endorse doing this while driving.

After my first day with Google Glass, there are things that I definitely like about and things that I would like to see improved. The two things that stand out to me that need improvement are: battery life & screen dimming. The battery drains very quickly and the screen dimming is not always accurate, especially in broad daylight. I had better consistency with it in a fully lit indoor environment. Taking a picture or video and then sharing it is very easy. I like that I can pick post settings in Facebook as well. I like the idea of Google Play Music, but trying to tell it to play a specific song by a specific artist returned a “Not found” most of the times. I’ll give more feedback after I’ve started to use it more consistently. Currently, this is the list of “Glassware” (read as: apps) that I have installed so far:

  • CNN
  • Facebook
  • FieldTrip
  • Gmail
  • Google Now
  • Google Play Music (And it easily recognizes Beyoncé!!)
  • Google+
  • Thuuz Sports
  • Twitter
  • World Lens

I took Glass to a charity holiday party this past Sunday, so I will be posting about that in the next day or so. Stay tuned!!
